PM receives Asian media reps

The freedom of the press was a fundamental civil right, but its implementation must comply with legal regulations to ensure the liberties of one party did not infringe on those of another, PM Nguyen Tan Dung said on September 18.


The PM was addressing members of the Asia News Network (ANN) during a reception in Ha Noi.

He said the revised and recently adopted constitution of Viet Nam guaranteed freedom of the press.

He said he hoped the Asian media would share their experiences in providing accurate, prompt and objective news for the common goal of co-operation, peace, friendship and development.

Dung said Viet Nam was actively supporting ASEAN to build the ASEAN Community (AC) by 2015.
He said the establishment of the community posed opportunities and challenges for Viet Nam, particularly in improving competitiveness. Therefore, he added, it was taking all the necessary measures to secure rapid and sustainable growth, including institutional reform and the development of human resources.

Presenting Viet Nam's position on East Sea issues, Dung said peace, stability, security, plus safety for navigation and aviation were common concerns for ASEAN and the region.

The bloc's stance on these issues was clearly manifested in ASEAN's six-point principles on the East Sea, which required all parties to abide by international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and create a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

ANN is a consortium of 22 newspapers spanning 19 countries and territories. The network is looking at ways to take better advantage of technology to deliver content and increase co-operation to produce content of regional and world interest.

Pana Janviroj, executive editor of ANN and president of The Nation newspaper in Thailand, said the network planned to revamp its main website and explore better ways to share photos and videos with member papers.

He said it recently piloted an initiative where subscribers can access four e-papers from four media members of the network at the same time.

Other initiatives include working with media training institutions in the region to train the next generation of journalists covering Asia, and developing multimedia projects that explore in-depth Asian issues.

Accordingly, members will collaborate to provide in-depth coverage of Asia in 2015, such as the issue of migrant labor, how the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 affects life in ASEAN countries, the issue of human trafficking, including force labor, tainted food scandals and Asia's mega infrastructure projects.

At the meeting, representatives from various newsrooms offered updates on how their publications had to cope with declining print readership, advertising revenue and readers, especially as younger people were turning to social media and online sites for news.

Asif Ullah Khan, deputy managing editor of the Brunei Times, said the paper had recently launched newscasts in English, Chinese, and Brunei Malay and sending SMS alerts to readers on breaking news.
He said these intiatives had driven more readers to the online site of its newspaper.

Other representatives said their papers had made content more relevant to targeted readers, used social network tools to drive readers to the online site, trained staff in more multimedia skills, and developed exclusive content for online.

A representative from the Korea Herald said the paper had designated exclusive online content for K-pop news and K-drama news to compete with other social media sites and bloggers.

The delegates will meet with officials from the Vietnam News Agency on September 19.
