Top US military general arrives in Viet Nam for defence talks

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday received General Martin Dempsey, the first US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to visit Viet Nam.
The top-ranking American military officer was on a four-day official visit at the invitation of Gen. Do Ba Ty, Chief of General Staff of the Viet Nam People's Army.

At the meeting, PM Dung said Viet Nam wanted to further cooperate with the US in all areas, including security and defence for the benefit of both nations and for enhancing security and stability in the region and the world.

Dung noted that in defence cooperation, Viet Nam particularly wanted to work with the US in dealing with the issue of Agent Orange/Dioxin, exploded ordnances, English training for Vietnamese armies, and lifting the embargo on the sale of lethal weapons to Viet Nam.

Dempsey said that his visit showed a major commitment from the US in wanting to be a partner with Viet Nam and ensuring peace and security in the region.

Dempsey said peace, security, stability, navigation and air freedom are critical issues in the Asia-Pacific region and aggressive actions of one country could threaten Viet Nam, other ASEAN nations and also benefits of other countries, including the US.

He called on all countries to respect international law and refrain from using weapons and engaging in military actions in the region.

He said that the US would find a way to lift the embargo on the sale of lethal weapons to Viet Nam as an increased number of people in the US Government and senators had shown their support for this.

Dempsey also met with Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh yesterday in Ha Noi.

Speaking about the outcome of the talks between Dempsey and Chief of the General Staff of the Viet Nam People's Army Do Ba Ty, Thanh held out hope that the US army chief will continue to support the fostering of bilateral relations in all fields for peace and prosperity in the region and the world at large.

For his part, Dempsey suggested that the two armies continue actively implementing signed agreements and agree on cooperative orientations in order to nurture the partnership between the two countries.
