Fertiliser chemicals may have caused explosion: report

The HCM City police plan to expand the investigation to gather more evidence over the explosion at the District 2-based Dang Huynh fertiliser company that killed three people on Friday.

The police are planning to take action after receiving the preliminary investigation report from the city fire police, which shows that the explosion might have been unintentionally triggered by workers as the chemical substances that the company uses to make fertilisers are also precursors of explosives.

The company reportedly stored 320kg of potassium nitrate, 25kg of potassium chlorate and some drums containing calcium, sulfur and magnesium solutions at the workshop before the explosion took place.

However, the fire police did not rule out the possibility that there might have explosive-making activities that caused the explosion.
