Military told to target smugglers

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the military to heighten its patrol of land and sea borders to help prevent smuggling and trade fraud.

At a working session with the Ministry of Defence yesterday, Phuc also instructed relevant ministries and agencies to punish those involved in the illegal activities.

Phuc, who heads the National Steering Committee on combating smuggling, asked border guard forces to strengthen co-operation with Viet Nam's neighbours to address the problems.

He said the defence ministry and other agencies should also work with the media in communication campaigns to raise awareness of people, especially those in border areas.

The ministry reported that in the first seven months of 2014, drug trafficking, counterfeit smuggling and other kinds of crime along the country's shared borderline were complicated.

It noted the increasing smuggling of coal, mineral ores, petrol, tobacco, sugar, foreign currencies, precious metals, and consumer goods through border gates, customs clearance sites, jungle paths, sea ports, and railways.

During the period, the military uncovered 854 drug cases involving 1,142 traffickers, seized 754 bricks of heroin, and 29kg of synthetic drugs. They also detained 1,278 smugglers
