Untreated waste water discharged from industrial zones and abattoirs of Ha Noi have caused serious pollution in the surrounding environment.
Investigations by the city's Industry and Trade Department have revealed that 91 of 107 industrial zones have not yet constructed waste water treatment systems.
Waste water at an industrial zone in Ha Noi. More than 90 of the 107 industrial zones in the capital do not have waste water treatment systems, according to the city's Industry and Trade Department
Meanwhile, the city at present has 21 large, modern abattoirs and more than 440 small ones.
However, only 4 modern abattoirs have constructed waste water treatment systems.
The remaining abattoirs discharge a large amount of untreated waste water into the environment, the department noted.
According to the department, shortage of centralised planning of wastewater treatment systems in the industrial zones and high costs to build the systems in both industrial zones and abattoirs were the reasons for the situation.
In an attempt to bring the situation under control, inspectors of the department have taken action against small unhygienic abattoirs and have ordered large abattoirs to build wastewater treatment systems immediately.
Nguyen Van Nam, head of Economy and Budget Division under the capital People's Council, noted that authorised agencies were required to submit solutions to control the situation.
