NA leader meets US senator in hopes of boosting co-operation

Viet Nam attaches great importance to its relations with the United States and is determined to implement agreements in the spirit of comprehensive partnership between the two countries, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said on April 17.
In talks held with President Pro Tempore of the US Senate Patrick Leahy, who is in Ha Noi on an official visit, Hung spoke highly of the significant contributions that Leahy and other US Congressmen have made to heal the wounds of war in Viet Nam.
He expressed his hope that the two countries would further these efforts towards building a new relationship in the long-term interest of both nations.
The current level of co-operation is yet to match the potential on boths ides, Hung said, suggesting the two countries' legislative bodies step up exchanges and push for a swift recognition of Viet Nam as a market economy.
He also said the two sides should work together on negotiating the Trans-Asia Pacific Partnership treaty to ensure benefits for both sides and avoid provisions that can adversely affect bilateral economic and trade ties.
Viet Nam wishes that the US Congress allocates sufficient funds to deal with humanitarian issues left over the war, the NA chairman said.
Hung used the occasion to invite the US Senate leader to attend the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which Viet Nam will host in 2015 – the year marking the 20th anniversary of the Viet Nam-US diplomatic ties.
Senator Leahy said that during this visit, his delegation, comprising both Democrat and Republican lawmakers, is seeking co-operation opportunities to strengthen relations between the two countries as well as the two legislative bodies.
He affirmed his support for the US's efforts to address consequences of the war in Viet Nam and fostering ties between the people of both countries.
Successes in socio-economic co-operation between the US and Viet Nam are of special significance because they will help direct and forge stronger bilateral ties in the future, he said.
Later in the day, Hung hosted a banquet for the visiting senator and his entourage.

Meeting the visiting US Senate Leahy yesterday, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has proposed that the US continue to work closely with Viet Nam in healing the pains of war, especially through in removing mines and supporting victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Viet Nam.
The Party leader said he wished to witness more progress in bilateral co-operation between the two nations, particularly as they were celebrating the 20th anniversary of normalised relations.
Viet Nam considered the US a top important partner, Trong suggested that the two sides maintain and increase ties at all levels.
Leahy briefed his host on the fruitful outcomes of his working sessions with Vietnamese leaders.
Praising the rising position of Viet Nam in the region and the world, he said the Parliament and Government of the US were keen on strengthening comprehensive co-operation with Viet Nam set up last July.
Leahy showed special interest in the development of ties between the two parliaments, voicing his support for the establishment of bilateral relationship through party channels.
He appreciated Viet Nam's goodwill and co-operation in seeking missing US soldiers, pledging that his country would continue its efforts to deal with the consequences of war faced by Viet Nam.
During the meeting, Trong and the US senators also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern.
They also underscored the importance of bilateral affiliation in maintaining peace, stability, prosperity and development in the region and the world.
