When April arrives, it’s the time for harvesting lilies in the flower village of Tay Tuu in Tu Liem District.
This is the lily garden of Ms. Phan Thi Mai in Tay Tuu Village. Mai says the harvest season will last until mid-April. She cuts about 1,000 lilies each day.
The lily bulbs are still buried in the ground to wait for the next harvest season in September. During this time, gardeners plant daisies. Lilies prefer new soil. Many farmers in Tay Tuu Village hire fields in Dan Phuong District to plant lilies.
Lilies are afraid of rain and frost. The current harsh weather in Hanoi has harmed many lily trees. For each damaged lily, farmers will lose from VND1,500 to VND2,000.
Gardeners harvest lilies by hand, not with knives or scissors.
Mr. Nguyen Tu Luu says he earns a profit of VND20 to VND30 million ($1,000-1,500) each season.
Lilies are sold wholesale at the Quang Ba flower market for VND200,000 ($10) a 100-unit bunch.
Each tree yields two to five flowers.
After a few days, flowers bloom, displaying their white petals. People call lilies the flowers of memories.
The new species of lily yields bigger flowers.
These simple white flowers are not sold in flower shops but follow vendors through Hanoi’s streets. They are compared to shiny little girls.
As a nice habit, in April, many Hanoian families decorate their home with lily vases.
