Cuban revolutionary and active campaigner against the American War, Melba Hernandez Rodriguez del Rey, "The Heroine of Moncada", passed away last Sunday.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong (L) visits Cuban heroine Melba Hernandez Rodriguez del Rey in Habana 2010.
She was 92.
Melba Hernandez, a member of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee and a former National Assembly member, was one of two women who took part in the 1953 attacks launched by Fidel Castro on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespesdes barracks.
She later served as the Cuban Ambassador to Viet Nam. An admirer of Viet Nam's revolutionary history and its resistance against invaders, she had said that Viet Nam will always be an inspiring example for peace-loving nations in the world.
For her great contributions to the Cuban Revolution and the promotion of solidarity between Cuba and other nations, she has been honoured with many medals and awards by the Party and Government of her native country as well as those of other friendly nations around the world.
