The Party leader said it was Viet Nam's honour to host the IPU-132, which is an important political and diplomatic event. He said it demonstrated the country's policy of open diplomacy and active international integration.
He highly valued the IPU as a special forum of official parliamentary diplomacy, saying it had made responsible and effective political and economic contributions.
The Party leader also said that the IPU-132 was a valuable opportunity for global parliamentarians to discuss the event's main theme: "Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Action."
A peaceful and stable environment is a prerequisite and the cornerstone for successful implementation of sustainable development goals, he stressed, hoping that the Assembly would reach a high degree of consensus in the discussions and issue a landmark statement.
IPU President Chowdhury expressed his admiration for Viet Nam's development accomplishments and spoke highly of the Vietnamese National Assembly's active and responsible engagement in the IPU.
He said he was impressed with the host's thorough preparations for IPU-132.
Chowdhury said he hoped to continue working with the IPU Executive Committee and member parliaments to promote the establishment of a global partnership based on solidarity and determination.
PM meets foreign MPs
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday welcomed Cambodia's participation in the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU-132) saying it would be an important contribution to the meeting's success.
Meeting with President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin, he said the latter's visit would also boost friendship and multifaceted co-operation between the two countries.
Viet Nam would exert all efforts to intensify bilateral co-operation and work closer with Cambodia to ensure peace and development in their border areas, he said.
He expressed his hope that the Cambodian National Assembly would support the economic connectivity programme planned by the governments of both countries.
The PM also conveyed his best wishes to King Norodom Sihamoni, the Queen Mother, and the country's leaders on the occasion of Cambodia's traditional New Year festival, Chol Chnam Thmay.
Heng Samrin expressed his happiness at the development of bilateral ties and thanked Viet Nam for helping Cambodia escape from the clutches of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in the past.
The Cambodian National Assembly fully supported the co-operative ties between the two countries, he said, adding that he believed the two-way trade target of US$5 billion this year would be attainable.
Receiving Heng Samrin yesterday, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung echoed the PM's belief that Cambodia would actively contribute to the success of IPU-132, held in Hanoi from today until April 1.
He congratulated the Cambodian people on their achievements and expressed confidence that Cambodia would continue to make socio-economic progress under the leadership of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, the country's Government and Parliament.
He noted that co-operation between the two countries was growing in politics, diplomacy, economics, culture, and science and technology, and delegation exchanges at all levels continued to take place.
Heng Samrin – who is also Chairman of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodia – congratulated Viet Nam on hosting IPU-132 and praised preparations made for the important event.
He said the Cambodian Parliament fully supported the agenda set by the IPU-132 organising board and believed these themes would receive high levels of consensus from member countries.
German MP welcomed
Prime Minister Dung also received Norbert Lammert, President of the German Parliament, in Ha Noi yesterday.
He said he valued the positive progress in bilateral co-operation since Viet Nam and Germany raised their ties to a strategic partnership.
He hoped that the German Parliament would support Viet Nam and the European Union in their efforts to conclude soon their negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement.
Dung also urged Germany to recognise Viet Nam as a market economy to facilitate its development.
Lammert said that as the two nations marked the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year, Germany was committed to promoting co-operation projects, especially in education, with the Viet Nam-Germany University in HCM City being an outstanding example.
PM Dung expressed his condolences to German leaders and people over the crash of a Germanwings aircraft that crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday, killing all 150 people on board.
