Japanese writer to speak about his work

Popular writer Takahashi Genichiro will interact with Vietnamese audiences in Ha Noi and HCM City on March 10 and 12 respectively.

He will speak at Ha Noi's Social Sciences and Humanities University and HCM City's Social Sciences and Humanities University. He will introduce his first novel "Sayonara, Gyangutachi" (Sayonara, Gangsters) and speak on contemporary literature.

Takahashi was born in Onomichi in the Hiroshima prefecture and attended the Economics Department of Yokohama National University without graduating.

As a radical student, he was arrested and spent half a year in prison, which caused Takahashi to develop a form of aphasia.

As part of his treatment, his doctors encouraged him to start writing. Since April 2005, he has been a professor at the International Department of Meiji Gakuin University. Takahashi's current wife, Tanikawa Naoko and former wife Murai Yuzuki were also writers.

His first novel "Sayonara, Gangsters," published in 1982, won the Gunzo Literary Award for First Novels. It has been acclaimed by critics as one of the most important works of postwar Japanese literature and has been translated into English, Italian, Brazilian and Portuguese languages.

In addition, his book "Yuga de kansho-teki na Nippon-yakyuu" ("Japanese Baseball: Elegant and Sentimental") won the Mishima Yukio Prize in 1988, and another one "Nihon bungaku seisui shi" (The Rise and Fall of Japanese Literature) received the Itoh Sei Literature Award.

In 2012, his "Sayonara Christopher Robin" ("Goodbye, Christopher Robin") won the Tanizaki Prize.

He is also a noted essayist, having written on a diverse field of topics ranging from literary criticism to horse-racing.
The interactions are part of a series of Viet Nam-Japan cultural exchange activities in the year 2014. Entry is free and the sessions will be conducted in English and Vietnamese
