VN seeks strong Sri Lanka ties

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met his Sri Lankan counterpart, D.M. Jayaratne, yesterday, voicing hope that Sri Lanka would create favourable conditions for Vietnamese firms, especially oil and gas enterprises, seeking investment opportunities.
Dung said the potential for co-operation had yet to be tapped so there was an opportunity to increase partnership in trade, investment and tourism.
He added that negotiations should also be held to strike a deal on preferential trade and bilateral financial agreement.
He added that the two sides should form a sub-committee on trade within the framework of their inter-governmental committee and boost affiliations in agriculture and fisheries.
The PM said the two countries should work more closely in culture, education, science and technology, while enhancing the exchange of delegations to boost mutual understanding and supporting each other at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations.
Jayaratne, who is visiting Viet Nam to attend United Nations Vesak Day, said he was impressed with the socio-economic achievements in Viet Nam, adding that Sri Lanka was keen to expand relations in all fields.
The Sri Lankan leader said the two countries should also focus on increasing affiliation in religious affairs, crime prevention, national policies, science and technology.
On the Eat Sea issue, Jayaratne asserted that the disputes must be settled through peaceful measures and respect international law. The parties involved should not conduct unilateral moves that could intensify tension, he added.
Regarding China's placement of its oil rig in Viet Nam's waters, the Sri Lankan PM said his country supported Viet Nam's request for China's to strictly adhere to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.
He also said it should withdraw its illegal oil rig from Viet Nam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf to ensure peace and stability in the region.
