A Chinese man was arrested for allegedly trying to steal from another passenger on a Vietnam Airlines flight Tuesday.
Dong Jiayi, 35, boarded a plane bound for Hong Kong at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
A grab from a video clip shot by a Vietnam Airlines flight attendant January 19 shows Chinese passenger Zhang Giang, 41, about to rummage in an overhead compartment in an attempt to steal on a flight from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City
When the passengers had settled in their seats, Wai Lin Richard of Hong Kong spotted someone rummaging his bag in the overhead bin above his seat.
He secretly informed crew members about it, and they arrived at the scene and caught Dong red-handed.
He put his own bag in the overhead above Wai's seat so that he could rifle through other passengers’ bags without attracting suspicion.
He had not managed to steal anything when he was caught.
Wai asked to stay back to complain to Vietnamese authorities, and the crew obliged.
Dong was also handed over to the police.
Vietnam Airlines arranged for Wai to board the next flight to Hong Kong the same day.
He was the fourth Chinese national caught red-handed this year trying to steal on a Vietnam Airlines flight.
On March 1 Gui Gouliang, 41, was caught trying to steal a wallet from the bag of a Vietnamese-Australian passenger on a flight from Singapore to HCMC.
He had left his seat and searched the overhead compartment where the victim had kept her handbag.
The victim, Patrick Trinh, caught the Chinese in the act, and informed the crew who later handed him over to the police when the airplane landed at Tan Son Nhat.
Gui was expelled from Vietnam.
On January 19 a Vietnam Airlines flight attendant spotted Zhang Giang and Ren Guanghan, both 41, rummaging through the luggage of another passenger on a flight from Bangkok to HCMC.
She filmed their act on her mobile phone and showed them the clip.
Le Truong Giang, a spokesperson for Vietnam Airlines, said the carrier has blacklisted Dong, Gui, Zhang, and Ren.
