Vietnam Airlines cancels flights to improve airport for bad weather

Vietnam Airlines is canceling flights to and from the northern province of Thanh Hoa until March 11 due to thick fogs and poor airport infrastructure.
A Tuesday statement from the national carrier said it is canceling 20 flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh Hoa, which will affect more than 2,000 passengers.

Le Dinh Thang, head of its office in Thanh Hoa, said thick fog has appeared around the new airport Tho Xuan while ground instructions for such situation have not been developed.
Tho Xuan was converted from a military airbase and put in use in early February last year, when Vietnam Airlines launched the Ho Chi Minh City-Thanh Hoa route with five flights a week.
The airline just cancelled 20 flights to and from the airport between February 17 and Tuesday for similar reasons .
It said it would help arrange seats for the affected passengers on increased flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi which is 150 kilometers away from Thanh Hoa, as well as HCMC and Vinh, the capital town of Nghe An Province neighboring Thanh Hoa.
Thang said the company will work with local authorities to improve the airport infrastructure soon to save further losses for the company and inconvenience for the customers.
