Ba Tinh rural bridge in Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province. New bridges will be built in 32 provinces in the northern mountains, central region, and Central Highlands at a cost of VND325 billion (US$15.5 million).
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the construction of the bridges in rural and mountainous areas as part of a programme to develop rural areas and alleviate poverty there.
By the end of this decade 450 bridges will be built using Government funds. Compensation for land will be paid by local governments, while youths and other locals will provide voluntary labour.
The bridges will be built over streams and canals that cut off roads between hamlets and those leading to communes, towns, schools, clinics, and other important areas, and pose a threat during the rainy season.
They have to dovetail with rural transport master plans approved by local authorities.
