Colorful buffaloes at Tich Dien Festival

On the morning of the 7th day of the lunar year, the Tich Dien Festival or the King’s Plowing Festival is held in Doi Son commune, Duy Tien district, Ha Nam province, to mark a new year for farming.
The festival was restored by Ha Nam province six years ago and since then is held annually on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year--to pray for bumper harvests and a prosperous year.
The Tich Dien fest originated in 1987, based on when King Le Dai Hanh (941- 1005) ploughed a field in Doi Son Commune, Duy Tien District, to encourage local farmers to work diligently.
The festival opened with dragon dances, processions and giving offerings to God.
More than 10 strong and healthy buffaloes decorated with a lot of spring images appeared at the 2014 Tich Dien Festival.

Before the official rituals, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan and local leaders offered incense.
This year Mr. Dinh Trong Te, 85, was honored to play "King Le Dai Hanh”.
This is the 6th year Mr. Te was selected to play this role.
 
The King was the first who plowed the field.
The King was followed by the elders and local officials.
And then girls sowed seeds, praying for good harvests.
